Chandrashila peak located at a height of 4,130 m is a summit of Tungnath , where the world’s highest temple of lord Shiva is situated. This peak gifts you with the spectacular view of Nandadevi, Trishul, Kedarnath, Bandarpunchh and Chaukhamba peaks. Chandrashila literally means “moon rock”. According to a legend the Chandra Devta (the moon God) spent time here in penance.

The trek to Chandrashila starts from Chopta from where the peak is 5 kms. This trek can be done all year round except for the winter months of January & February due to heavy snowfall in the region.

Getting to Chopta :

Road: Chopta is nicely connected by motorable roads with all the major destinations in Uttarakhand. Buses & taxis to Chopta are easily available from Dehradun, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Uttarkashi, Pauri, Rudraprayag, Gaurikund, Srinagar, Gopeshwar etc. Buses to Rishikesh and Srinagar are available from ISBT Kashmere Gate , Delhi.

Nearest Railhead: The nearest railhead to Chopta is Rishikesh which is about 202 kms from Chopta. From Rishikesh , buses & taxis are easily available to Chopta.

Nearest Airport: The nearest airport to Chopta is Jolly Grant Airport which is well connected to Delhi with daily flights. You can hire a taxi from Jolly Grant Airport to chopta.

Trek Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival at Chopta
           Night accomodation at hotel / Camps

Day 2:

From Chopta it is a one day trek to the Chandrashila Summit. The total distance from Chopta to Chandrashila summit is 5kms. It takes about 3-4 hrs to reach the summit. Chopta to Tungnath (3 kms) and Tungnath to summit (2 kms).

We start the trek early in the morning at around 6:30 am. The trail starts on the slope of a hill through the dense forests of oak, deodar and rhododendron. After about 20-25 mins of walking we get the views of Himalayan peaks with the sun rays falling on them . One has to stop for a few minutes to enjoy this view. After about 1 km the forest trails now enters green meadows and open blue skies. Another 1 km on the trail and we reach a resting place made of stone benches & a small hut. From here we get a perfect view of Gangotri, Kedar, Chaukhamba, Satopanth, Neelkanth and many other peaks .

There are many iron fences throughout the trail which provide support to trekkers especially at higher altitudes. As we dash towards Tungnath temple , the last 500 m is almost level walking trail. Tungnath is one among the Panch Kedar and is the highest temple of Lord Shiva in the world . For an average trekker it takes around 3 hrs & 15 mins to reach Tungnath. Trekkers take a break and have breakfast here.

After the break we head towards the Chandrashila peak. After about 5 mins of walking the trail becomes steep for about 300 metres after which we reach a flat portion. Again as we leave this area there is a steep trail for almost a km . After about 300 – 350 metres there is a semi flat portion where trekkers take rest and after that it is very steep till the summit . From here an average trekker takes about 45 mins to reach the summit. The last portion is a zigzag path which leads us to the Chandrashila summit . It gives a magnificent view of the Himalayan peaks. A small temple devoted to the river Godess Ganga is situated here.

After enjoying at the summit the trekkers head downwards through the same trail and reach Tungnath at around 12:30 pm & take some rest. We reach Chopta at around 2:30 pm . Night accomodation at hotel / camps . End of the Trek
